The examinations included subjects such as\u00a0<em>xiaolian (<\/em>filial respect and integrity), <em>xiucai <\/em>(outstanding abilities) and <em>xianliang <\/em>(proficiency in the classical literature). During most of the Han dynasty, <em>xiucai<\/em> could not be used because the character x<em>iu<\/em> (\u79c0) was part of the name of the Han Emperor <em>Wu <\/em>and therefore taboo. Writers often followed a common practice during the Han dynasty and replaced <em>xiu <\/em>by the character <em>mao <\/em>(\u8302).
