From <em>taximeter cabriolet<\/em> he coined the word <em>taxicab<\/em>. This was then further clipped, at the end in Britain, at the beginning in America, thus giving <em>taxi <\/em>and <em>cab<\/em>! A <em>cabriolet <\/em> was a horse-drawn carriage, from French <em>cabrioler<\/em>, \u2018leap&#8217;, &#8216;caper\u2019, ultimately going back to Latin <em>capreolus<\/em>, \u2018roebuck\u2019 (which is also at the bottom of German <em>Kapriolen<\/em>!). <em>Taximeter<\/em> is an adaptation of French <em>taxim\u00e8tre<\/em>, from German <em>taxameter<\/em>, coined on the basis of Medieval Latin <em>taxa<\/em>, \u2018tax\u2019, \u2018charge\u2019 and Greek <em>metron<\/em>, \u2018measure\u2019. The OED describes the uncertainty when it came to naming the new invention: &#8220;Every journalist &#8230; has his idea of what the vehicle should be called. It has been described as the (1) <em>taxi<\/em>, (2) <em>motor-cab<\/em>, (3) <em>taxi-cab<\/em>, (4) <em>taximo <\/em>&#8230; (7) <em>taximeter-cab<\/em>.
