This developed from the sacred tetragrammation\u00a0<em>YHVH. <\/em>As it was considered too sacred to pronounce, the vowels of <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Adonai<\/em><\/span>, another word for &#8216;God&#8217;, were inserted to give the substitute name <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Yahovah. <\/em>At least, this is the explanation provided in one source. (Room, Adrian: <em>A Dictionary of True Etymologies<\/em>. London, Boston and Henley: Routledge &amp; Kegan Paul, 1986: 92).
