{"id":4162,"date":"2013-08-16T16:40:42","date_gmt":"2013-08-16T14:40:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pregonero.de\/?p=4162"},"modified":"2020-06-17T18:59:52","modified_gmt":"2020-06-17T16:59:52","slug":"you-say-yea-i-say-nay","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/pregonero.de\/?p=4162","title":{"rendered":"You say yea, I say nay"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In older forms of English, a distinction was made between <em>yea<\/em> \/jei\/ and <em>nay<\/em> \/nei\/ and <em>yes<\/em> and <em>no<\/em>, the former two being used when the preceding statement contained no negative, the latter two being used when the preceding statement did contain a negative: &#8220;Myn hertes greef, mote I not wepe? &#8211; O yis.&#8221; (SOED: 2589) In this function, <em>yes<\/em> is comparable to German <em>doch<\/em>, French <em>si<\/em> or Swedish <em>jo<\/em>. The distinction became generally obsolete after 1600. It is remarkable that the \u201cnormal\u201d form has disappeared. The\u00a0\u201cstronger\u201d, the more emphatic form has survived.
