This is what has happend to me twice in the course of the last few days when marking student assignments. In both cases, the etymology of a word was concerned. One student pointed out that <em>world <\/em>is derived from the Germanic words for\u00a0\u2018man\u2019 and \u2018age\u2019, <em>wer<\/em> and <em>ald<\/em>. Makes sense, but who might have guessed? The other student points out that <em>hell <\/em>and <em>helmet <\/em>are etymologically related. The common element is its root, <em>kel<\/em>, which means something like \u2018conceal\u2019, \u2018cover\u2019, \u2018hide\u2019. Originally, before its Christian interpretation, <em>hell <\/em>was a neutral word and just meant the abode of the dead.
