Such words, so called <em>cognates<\/em> go back to one and the same word. They were identical in form and meaning, before English became English and German became German. Sometimes there are words which are not quite so obviously related:\u00a0<em>wife<\/em> and <em>Weib<\/em>, <em>tide <\/em>and <em>Zeit<\/em>, <em>knave <\/em>and <em>Knabe<\/em>. But about <em>town <\/em>and <em>meal <\/em>and <em>cup <\/em>and <em>fee <\/em>and <em>horse <\/em>and <em>timber<\/em>? It takes some serpentine thinking to find the solution.
