Bookcase

After a guided tour in Stratford-on-Avon I asked the guide what the title of the book was which he had written. – What book I was speaking about, he wanted to know. That book on Stratford he had mentioned he had written, I replied. He told me, rather severely, he had never mentioned anything of the sort. Rather embarrassed, I mumbled an apology and went my way. It took me years to realize what had happened. The guide must have said, “In my book, one of the finest parish churches in England” or something of the sort, using in my book to mean ‘in my opinion’, no more than a simple phrase used when giving your opinion. Small wonder he did not know what I was talking about.
