A few years ago, when internet shopping first emerged, a student told me that he bought his books at a company called Emerson. When the student had left the office, I tried the internet address, but it did not work. I forgot all about it and continued to buy my books at the Trier bookshops – not always a pleasant experience. Later, when internet shopping had become much more common, I started buying my own books at Amazon. Still later, I suddenly realised that that was what the student had told me. He had never spoken about Emerson, but about Amazon – and pronounced it “the German way”.
Zitate
Lady Astor, the first woman to take up her seat in the British Parliament, was renowned for her wit and for her pathological hatred of Winston Churchill. Their frequent slangy matches include this: “If you were my husband, Sir, I’d put poison in your tea. – If you were my wife, Madam, I’d drink it.”
