A good indication of the decline of Latin and the rise of French as an international language is the use of these two languages in the context of war diplomacy. In 1660, both the negotiations and the treaty between Sweden, Austria and Poland in Oliva were in Latin. In 1678, the negotiations between Sweden, France, Spain and others in Nijmegen was in French, the treaty was in Latin. In 1714, both the negotiations and the treaty between Austria and France in Rastatt were in French. (Janson, Tore: Sprakens historia. Stockholm: Nordstedts, 2011: 215)
