A few years ago, a German radio station broadcast a series of short stories. One afternoon, the radio announcer said that today’s short story was “Conversations with a buck”. No buck, however, made its appearance in the story, but another animal did, and it turned out that the title of the story wasn’t “Conversations with a buck”. It was “Conversations with a bug”. The radio announcer had pronounced it “the German way”.

Sir Isaac Pitman, the inventor of the first, simple phonetic shorthand, popularised his method in any way he could. He went as far as having his wife’s tombstone engraved in Putman shorthand. It read:
In memori ov
MERI PITMAN,
Weif of Mr. Eizak Pitman,
Fonetik Printer, ov this Sit.
