Tight associations

A (school) student once wrote in an essay that a man after an accident “was wearing an association around his arm”. It took me some time to figure out what the problem was, but then the penny dropped. The student had looked up the German word Verband in a dictionary, and then had used one of the words she found there to describe what she wanted to describe.
