Telling names

During my first three months in Trier I realised that my car dealer’s name was Junk, my doctor’s name was Krapp and one of my students’ name was Bitsch, all perfectly neutral and completely innocent names to the German ear. Not so to the English ear, which is likely to detect additional meaning here. May it be said in defence of the carrier of those names that none of them lived up to the expectations created by their names.
