Frederick Lonsdale, author of light-hearted comedies, was a member of the celebrated Garrick Club in London. One New Year’s Eve a friend asked him to make up with a club member he had quarrelled with and to go over and wish the man a happy New Year. Lonsdale approached his enemy and stuck out his hand: “I wish you a happy New Year. But only one.”
