Zemblanity
An experience you did not want to happen or did not want to know about. The word was coined by William Boyd, in Armadillo. He had heard of the unfortunate fate of the Arctic island of Novaya Semlya, north of mainland Russia, which was riddled with atomic blasts. Boyd was looking for a word to describe the experience and could not find one, so he coined the word, using (part of) the island’s name to describe what is the opposite of serendipity.
