Bye, Margaret – Hi, Meg

In the course of a day, a woman may be addressed as Margaret or Mrs Walker or Mum or Meg or dear or in other ways. Her business partner may say Good-bye, Margaret, her secretary See you tomorrow, the caretaker Bye Mrs Walker, her daughter Hi Mum, her mother Hello, dear and a friend Hi, Meg. She may respond in many different forms as well and might have addressed her daughter as Jenny or, to show that she is annoyed with her, with her full name, Jennifer. The choice of one linguistic form rather than another is a useful clue to non-linguistic information. (Holmes, Janet: An Introduction to Sociolinguistics.
